Happy belated Fourth of July! I hope you had a relaxing holiday. Fourth of July is one of my favorite summer days/holidays. I grew up going to a family cabin on a tiny lake, and the people there go very very America during the Fourth. The holiday isn’t a single day. It’s a whole weekend. One nice thing about this is everyone, even those who have to work the holiday, get to celebrate. There is pancake breakfast, a dance, sand castle contests, a bonfire, etc. It’s an event. Typically, we go to our cabin at a new lake, and we spend the day relaxing on the beach while family friends make hot dogs. Then we go watch fireworks after dinner. This year, however, we didn’t make it to the cabin. My dad was worried about working and we don’t have air conditioning in our cabin, which worried my sister because Piper (my niece) can’t get too hot!
So, this year we stayed home. While this may seem like a downer, it was actually super relaxing! We all dressed in our red, white, and blue and hung out by the pool. We swam and my dad smoked a few racks of ribs. My sister and I each made a dessert [she made berry crumble and I made a s’mores bake].
All in all, it was a great holiday. I’m absolutely loving being home this summer, and I feel so blessed to be near my amazing family!
How’d you spend your holiday?
This weekend was rather eventful. My mom and I got pedicures on Friday, then hit Barnes and Noble for a coffee date/ browsing for more summer reading books. On Saturday, I went to a baby shower with my family, which was beautiful. On Sunday, we headed to our family cabin for a Father’s Day relaxation and fancy dinner. Today is Monday, which despite the fact it is summer and I am currently on vacation, is still one of my least favorite days. However, I am at my cabin for a week, and I plan to read on the beach, relax in the evening, sit on the deck, and go browse the small boutiques in town. We are in the mountains, and the weather is nice and cooler, and it’s still a little quiet because the summertime cabin renters haven’t started flowing in my the masses, which is fine by me. Anyway, I wanted to share the outfit I wore to the baby shower on Saturday. I found this dress at Old Navy, and I love it. It’s super easy to throw on, and it’s very comfortable with a good amount of detail.

I love this dress! Honestly, I was a little scared when I originally bought it because it doesn’t have much shape, and I get nervous that shapeless pieces can look frumpy or make me look bigger, but this dress is still flattering (in my opinion). I love the beautiful stitched flowers and the clean tones! I also love the details at the bottom.
Funny story, however. Saturday was the first time I wore this dress, and while I was excited, I was nervous about wearing white. At the baby shower, the couple served these amazingly delicious pulled pork sandwiches. My dad was behind me in the food line, attempting to put barbecue sauce on his sandwich. Suddenly I heard a loud splat, and looked over to see that the sauce has squirted all over the place, including the back of my dress. YIKES. Luckily, the sauce came out of my dress and my dad’s shirt and shorts. It was a funny moment, and I’m glad the sauce didn’t stain my dress. Perhaps this is why the idea of white jeans still scares me.
It’s the second day of June, so I thought I would share my playlist for the month. I am finally fully unpacked, and I’m reading, and I’m writing. I’m writing the novel that’s been in the back of my mind for months now, and it feels really good. I finally found the perfect place to start. Something I’m learning about writing is that it’s easier to get to where you’re going if you allow yourself to revisit where you’ve been. I have a story I want to tell, and it’s time i tell it…so I’m writing it the only way I know how, in a novel. Anyway, here is what I’m currently listening to while I write:
I also wanted to share the outfit I wore yesterday. I’m obsessed with this blouse’s pattern and colors!
The weather is starting to get to that point where shorts or short sleeves are an absolute must if you wish to avoid burning up. I love short season because I get to wear my J Crew chino shorts again! There is something about brightly colored, tailored shorts that make me feel ready for whatever I planned in the day. This color was on sale this season, so I took advantage of that and picked up a pair.
Every year, the first few times I wear shorts, I feel kind of weird. During the winter months, I avoid shorts at all cost and live in jeans and leggings. The first time I wear shorts I feel like I have alien legs or something. I know that sounds weird, but it’s true! I was also cursed (or blessed if you’re into the milky white skin) with a very very light complexion. Where I’m from, most people tan all year long, and never really go “all natural” as far as skin goes, so my skin also seems almost transparent when I first start wearing shorts. In recent years, I’ve learned to embrace my pale skin, but sometimes it’s a challenge. I think most girls feel a little more glamorous when their skin has a golden tone to it.
On another note, I got this sweater at Old Navy! Talk about a score. I love anything with a nautical theme, so I immediately jumped on this sweater when I found it on sale AND in my size. Spring is always a hard time for me because I just love sweater season, so when it starts to get too warm to wear sweaters I fight pretty hard.
