Easy Halloween Outfits

4 Easy Halloween Costume Ideas.png

Hello, World.

Halloween is just around the corner, though how it’s already that time of the year is unclear. In light of the approaching holiday, I wanted to share some quick, easy costumes ideal for those of us who don’t have time to put together an elaborate costume and don’t want to spend $70 on an outfit we will wear once [Halloween costumes have seriously gone up and it’s a little ridiculous]. So, I’ve put together four outfits you can likely find at your local thrift store, any Forever 21 Store for a bargain,  or your own closet.

First up: The Pink Lady. This iconic costume came into being after Grease and has stayed popular ever since. Grab yourself a pink jacket, some leather pants, pumps, and a silk scarf and you’re good to go!

Second, Cher from Clueless… As if! The key to a great Cher costume is mixing extremely feminine touches with classic 90s pieces. I guess its a good thing 90s trends are making a comeback (hello, velvet and chokers!). The look below is a more subdued look than the signature yellow plaid outfit. This look is complete with a furry pen, cross necklace, knee highs, and Mary Jane shoes. Screen Shot 2017-10-11 at 6.16.37 PM

I recently watched the new Gal Gadot Wonder Woman movie… I know, I’m late to the party. Still, I loved it! I was inspired to create a fun Wonder Woman look. Carry a fake sword so you can take on Ares, over-the-knee boots in red (or black or pewter). Find a red corset or red bodysuit, and match with the signature blue and white star skirt for a 20 minute look. Screen Shot 2017-10-11 at 6.41.48 PM

Inspired by one of my close friends, Rossy, I’ve put together a DJ look! I imagine this is what an aspiring, kick ass DJ would wear (mainly because I could see Rossy wearing this look and she fits the bill). Screen Shot 2017-10-11 at 7.45.41 PM

What are you going as for Halloween? Do you prefer store-bought or homemade costumes?

Super Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Hello, World!

If you’re like me, then Halloween is one of those things you always want to dress up for, and you have a good costume idea around July, but somewhere October 1st, you think it’s still forever away, and then all of the sudden it’s the Thursday before and you have no costume and few ideas. Well, never fear! I’m here with some easy last minute ideas to throw together before any Halloween bashes this weekend.

With the Gilmore Girls revival coming up, this costume is relevant, and many people will probably know what you are! I’d suggest checking out your local thrift stores if you don’t already have some of the items in your closet. Otherwise, it’s easy to use similar items that you already own! Also, to top it off, I suggest getting to go coffee cups and pasting the label from the pop up Luke’s Diners on it. That’ll definitely give you away if the sharp contrast between cowgirl and prep school girl doesn’t! This is great for a friends duo costume. Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 9.51.47 PM.png

Need a really last minute alternative? Black skinnies, a black tee or blouse, and pumps will give you an undead vibe, then add some red lipstick and fake blood drips down you chin, and you’re all vamped out. Need inspiration? Watch an episode of Vampire Diaries! Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 9.56.16 PM.png

If you love a classic icon, then Audrey Hepburn is the look for you! Have a little black dress in your closet? Pair with pearls, pumps, some costume accessories, and you’re good to go. Also, to top it off I would add long black gloves you can. You can also make a fake cigarette holder with black paper if you don’t have one and don’t want to buy one! Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 10.36.31 PM.png

If you want to bend gender a bit, Luke Danes is a super easy look to pull off with stuff already in your closet. If you don’t have a flannel, I’m sure you could borrow one from a friend! And this look is incomplete without a backwards baseball cap! Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 10.28.47 PM.png

Want to go comfy but still dresses up? Do your hair and makeup, but wear PJs and a sleep mask, and BOOM, you’re a Victoria’s Secret model. Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 10.25.44 PM.png

Have a fancy dress that has a vintage vibe? Add a jeweled piece to your hair, and vintage or normal heels and you have a full flapper look reminiscent of the Great Gatsby. Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 9.58.51 PM.png

Again, a super easy look to pull off if you’re really crunched for time. Red accessories are all you need to complete this look. Also, if you have thick black-frammed glasses that’s even better, but they aren’t necessary!

What’s you costume this year?

Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Hello, World.

If you’re like me, then you haven’t really had time to think about Halloween costumes. I have no idea what I am going to dress up as on Saturday, so while I was trying to think of my own costume, so I started thinking about costumes that are fun, but also easy to throw together in a crunch! I came up with some fun ideas, and wanted to share because I’m sure a lot of us are lacking time to come up with a really elaborate costume!
Rosie the Riveter CostumeWhat it requires: Red bandanna, light denim shirt, dark denim jeans, converse or other shoes, red lipstick, and mascara
Audrey Hepburn/ Holly Golightly costumewhat it requires: long black dress, small tiara, strings of pearls, pearl earrings, cigarette stick, black pumps
"A" costumeWhat it requires: red pea coat, black jeans, black heeled boots (or flat), cell phone!!
Mia WallaceWhat it requires: loose fitting white button down, black slack material pant, black flats, bobbed hair-do
Elle Woods costumeWhat it requires: All the pink! Any combination of all pink, collegiate looking accessories and clothing would work! It’s even better if you have pink leather.

What are you going as for Halloween?

My Favorite Halloween Movies

Hello, World.

Halloween is on Friday, which means October is almost over! Oh, no… I refuse to accept this for multiple reasons. One being that after Halloween it is no longer socially acceptable to binge watch Halloween movies. I love holiday themed movies. Though my favorite are Christmas, I still love myself a good Halloween movie. When I was little I used to get all my homework done really quickly after school so I could watch the movies that played on Disney during October. I thought it’d be fun to compile a list of my favorite Halloween movies. To be honest, I kind of dislike really graphic and gruesome Halloween movies, so my list is more family oriented.
favorite halloween movies1) Halloweentown. Basically all movies in this series are just the best. They’re cheesy, sure, but there is something so wholesomely Halloween about them. These films encapsulate my entire childhood in regard to Halloween. I really wanted to be Marnie for a while…or at least just find out I was secretly a witch. I wanted some cool powers like any other girl.

2) Hocus Pocus. This movie used to kind of scare me, but I would always want to watch it. I guess I kind of liked being a little scared as a child. This movie is just so great…especially the part when the witches sing at the Halloween party. Oh goodness.

3) The Addams Family. Again, the movie kind of scared me, but I still always enjoyed it. You know something else? My sister and her fiance are going as Morticia and Gomez for Halloween this year. I’m so excited to see their costumes!

4) Harry Potter Series. Okay, okay, you got me. These aren’t Halloween movies specifically, but some feature Halloween time in them… and they’re about witches, wizards, supernatural, etc. SO, I’m going to go ahead and make the argument that it is perfectly acceptable to watch these films during Halloween.

5) Casper the Friendly Ghost. Hilary Duff as a young girl who’s friends with a ghost? What more can we ask for? I always adored this movie, cheesiness aside. I guess I had a major thing for witches, and I really wanted some powers.

What are your favorite Halloween movies?

Home for (early) Halloween

Hello, World.

This weekend I went home for four days because my school is amazing and gives us a nice little break after midterms. Its a really great chance to recuperate, gather yourself together, and just de-stress for a bit. I was really excited to be going home because I hadn’t seen my dad in over a month and a half, and I hadn’t seen my mom or sister in a while either. Also, there is my best friend, Rossy, who I always miss when I’m gone. She and I have been friends for five years and counting, and we’re those friends that may not be talking every single day, but the minute we hangout again, we’re right there for each other. She’s what I like to call my 2am friend, that friend that I can call at 2am and know, without a doubt, that she will be there in a heartbeat no matter what (2am friend created by Sarah Dessen, like most brilliant things).

Anyway, being home is fabulous because I absolutely love spending time with my family, and it was the first time I was able to hangout with my dad, and just talk to him, in a while. He’s truly one of the best people I know. He always knows what to say, even if he usually ends his statements with, “I don’t know if that helps.” Just so he knows, he usually helps! On another note, my mom gets SUPER into Halloween. Personally, I think Halloween is slowly dying from modern culture. Other than watching scary movies, most people decorate for “harvest,” and most of the costumes are because Halloween “is the one night a girl can dress like a total slut and no one can say anything about it.” But hey, that’s just my opinion, whatever floats your boat I suppose.

So, here are some photos of my break at home:

I wasn’t lying! My mom gets super into Halloween, and she is a phenomenal decorator. She makes all of her decorations (well, kind of), and I always feel like its definitely fall when I visit home in October. On Saturday night, we went to a Halloween party at my cousin’s house, which was great fun, and I dressed as a raccoon! I will probably post more photos of this outfit on Halloween, considering I loved this costume more than anything I’ve worn in previous years. As I mentioned, I got to see my best friend, Rossy, and visited her while she was working (I also snagged a beautiful pair of boots from the shoe store she works at!!). I ate at T. Bar, the best food place in Chico, in my opinion. If you’re ever in the area, GO THERE. :) My sister, my beautiful lovely talented sister, did my hair while I was home. I wanted to go darker for fall, and she was happy to make that change, and as usual, it turned out great and I love it!
The funny thing that did happen, is my mom put out some of my grandmother’s books as decoration, and I happened to pick up one (probably the bibliophile in me), and it was entitled, “Best English Poems.” I used to play with this book all the time when I was little, and would pretend to be a schoolteacher for imaginary students (yes, I was that kid). BUT, revisiting it the other day, I realized now I actually know, have read, and have researched the poets in this little leather book. I felt, for a moment, that maybe all this stress is actually useful to me, but who knows. Anyway, being home with my family was great. I feel like I spent most of my summer hating Chico, hating being away from school, and hating being away from friends, but having a few days to remember why I love Chico was really nice. I also had a chance to catch up on Vampire Diaries, go on a coffee date with my mom, drive around the rice fields with my dad, and just be me. Not to toot my own horn, but I finally remembered that being me is the best I can be, and its a pretty good thing to be. Anyway, I’m exhausted, and I’ve gone on for more than enough time about how wonderful my loving family is. Enjoy your night, morning, or afternoon (depending on when you read this). And remember, fall is the best time of the year. Everything begins to prepare for a new year, and a new beginning.
