Getting Formal

Hello, World!

With prom and formal season approaching quickly, I thought it would be helpful to share my hints for making the most of your night! I believe that the key to a successful formal or prom night is feeling amazing in what you’re wearing. When I was in high school, prom season was always a bit scary. I wanted the perfect dress, complimented by the best jewelry, a pretty hair style, and effortless, red carpet ready makeup.

After high school, formal events weren’t really on my radar. My college didn’t have greek life, so we didn’t have sorority formal, and we also didn’t have “formal” dances. Interestingly enough, law school has a prom type event. Last weekend was Barrister’s Ball, an annual event held at law schools in common law countries. It was a blast, and it was the first time I really dressed up since my sister’s wedding!

It was so fun to get all glam. My normal glam squad (aka my sister and mom) are all the way in CA. Luckily, my roommate helped me apply some fake tan (I use Josie Maran; I was wearing black and my skin hasn’t seen the sun since September). We went and got mani-pedis, and I got my makeup done at Ulta (more on that to come in a future post). Getting super fancy is so much fun, but sometimes its hard to know the right thing to wear for different functions. For example, there were a lot of mixed messages about how formal the Ball was supposed to be. Here are some examples of what my friends and I wore:

I have four commandments for formal wear that I want to share!

  1. Get a dress that you feel incredible in. Try on as many dresses as you need to until you find the one that makes you feel like Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn or your personal style icon. Loving the dress will mean you wear it more confidently.
  2. Treat yourself to the royal treatment. In preparation for a super formal event, I usually light candles, put on a great playlist, and wear my favorite robe around. I feel a little more glamorous, which makes the getting ready process more fun.
  3. Wear the makeup you want to wear. I think with formal wear there is pressure to really amp up your glam. If this is what you like, you should totally go for it! However, if you love subtle makeup, don’t be afraid to wear less. Or pull an Alicia Keys, and don’t wear any!
  4. Jewelry is like icing on a cake – too much can make you unhappy and too little can leave you wanting. I usually go less heavy on jewelry, especially as I get older. In high school, I wore bracelets, earrings, a necklace, etc. Now, I figure out what I think will most compliment the dress and myself in the dress. With the above look, I only wore large, fun earrings!

I think girls sometimes have it easier – I know, I know, don’t object yet – because there is such a plethora of input (go read Seventeen or Cosmo or any website), and you can easily figure out what is appropriate. However, menswear is a bit trickier. There isn’t the same amount of access to information for menswear that there is for women. Additionally, to be completely transparent, most men just ask their date what to wear. I don’t know about you, but when my dates would ask me, I would just give them a color (to match my dress), but leave out any real detail, or any real answer for that matter. Luckily, The Black Tux put together a detailed but quick cheat sheet for proper menswear for various events.

How To Style Your Man.jpg

Next time your date for prom or formal asks what to wear, you can be more specific. Or, if you’re having a formal date night with your boyfriend, you can help him dress accordingly. For those of you with brothers, you can help him be fashionable and make the right choice for his next date/formal event. When I’m home, my dad usually asks my opinion on fashion related things. I do my best, but menswear isn’t my specialty. If you’re in a similar boat, this cheat sheet helps! Dressing well can be expensive, but an option I recommend (especially for prom or formal), is renting! Men can choose from a great selection of menswear to make them look their best.

Most guys and girls get into a bit of a rut in their everyday dress. However, with formal events girls at least have an opportunity to really mix it up. Guys, on the other hand, tend to stick to roughly two options (tux or tux). This guide from The Black Tux encourages a little more creativity, and gives specifics about what exactly should be worn according to what the dress code is. When you’re sure of the pieces you need, it’s easier to have the confidence to get more creative with what version of those pieces you select! For example, if you know you need a sport coat, trousers, and a button down, you may be more willing to pick a patterned button down because you’re no longer worrying about what kind of shirt to wear.

I hope you enjoyed this post!

Cold Weather Accessories

Hello, World.

It’s getting chilly here in Virginia! Today there was definitely a biting cold in the air as I was walking into my law school building. Moving from California is an adjustment. I knew I’d be cold, but it’s interesting to me that 60 degrees here feels significantly colder than 60 degrees in CA. It’s also raining more, which requires umbrellas, and other cold weather accessories! Today, I wanted my go to items once the chill in the air gets a little more intense!

All I Want for Christmas Is…

Hello World.

I’m 22 years old, and yet I still take Christmas SO seriously. I love the holiday season. I started getting ridiculously into it when I was away from home for the first time in college. I remember thinking of the holidays as markers. Halloween meant the semester was half over, Thanksgiving was the weekend of pure bliss and food before the finals countdown, and Christmas meant that the semester was over, and it was time to be jolly with the family and bring on good cheer. I think now it’s hard because I’m not going home until Christmas, but I take the month of December (well, November and December really), so seriously in preparation. I ordered my December Daily album for this year, and started compiling a list for my mom (she requests one every year for ideas). This year, I noticed my list is a little heavy on coats, but it’s okay because I hear Virginia after winter break is VERY cold.

So, anywhere, here are the things I’m currently asking Santa for. I know it might be early to think about Christmas, but it approaches so fast, and the earlier you think about gifts you want to give as well as receive the better!

Fall…

Hello, World!

Fall is, technically, officially here! I’m so excited for the leaves to change, the temperatures to drop, and the warm lattes. Although it’s still pretty warm (mid 70s-low 80s), I’m trying to convince myself it’s going to get colder because I love the cold. I also cannot stress enough how excited I am to actually have distinct seasons. I’m ready for an East Coast fall and some snow come winter! I wanted to share a quick fall outfit, in case it’s actually pretty cold where some of you are! And if it’s not, well, here’s some inspiration and hope that fall comes faster.

My Go-To Winter Outfits

Hello, World.

California is actually experiencing winter this year! I’m so excited that we actually have rainy days, and I finally get to bring out my rain boots! I wanted to put together my go-to winter outfits, and share them. I dress pretty casually during the winter because I just want to stay dry and warm, but I also want to still look put together and stylish. So, with that in mind, I’ve created four looks that I like best for winter!Screen Shot 2016-01-22 at 7.41.46 PM
When I study on the weekends, I want to stay dry and warm, but also have enough layers on that if the heater is on high at the coffee house, I can shed layers and still be warm and comfy. This outfit is perfect for avoiding the rain when going from my car to the coffee house, but I can also remove the jacket and still have a warm enough sweater to enjoy myself! Riding boots are comfortable, but also water proof (if you spray the leather), so that you can be comfortable while studying, and warm and dry!

When I run errands on the weekend I want to be comfortable, and dry. I also want to make sure I’m not too overdressed, in terms of layers, because running around town makes me warm. So, this outfit is perfect because the rain boots keep my feet dry, are comfortable, and easy to throw on. The denim jacket provides warmth, but can also be easily removed, and the cable knit underneath is warm enough to be worn alone, but cool enough that I won’t overheat in the grocery store.
shop the look: sweater | denim jacket | black jeans | Hunter boots Screen Shot 2016-01-22 at 7.33.21 PM
This outfit is one of my favorite outfits for activities with my friends on the weekend. A field jacket is lightweight, but also warm. The sweater is warm but can also be worn alone if I take off my jacket somewhere. The boyfriend fit jeans are comfortable and easy. I love booties because they give the outfit a slightly more dressed up feel, and are a little cooler than full on boots. Also, bucket bags are my favorite bag trend at the moment!
shop the look: sweater | jacket | jeans | booties | bag Screen Shot 2016-01-22 at 8.04.11 PM
I’m someone who has to dress up a little for class. I don’t really feel like I’m ready for the day unless I’m wearing real clothes (no yoga pants), and I love boots in the winter. This outfit is great because it combines my favorite pieces of clothing: jeans, riding boots, a comfy tee, and a great jacket. A beanie is always great when it’s raining because my hair becomes a total mess, and a beanie makes it so my hair is out of the way and not a concern.

Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Hello, World.

If you’re like me, then you haven’t really had time to think about Halloween costumes. I have no idea what I am going to dress up as on Saturday, so while I was trying to think of my own costume, so I started thinking about costumes that are fun, but also easy to throw together in a crunch! I came up with some fun ideas, and wanted to share because I’m sure a lot of us are lacking time to come up with a really elaborate costume!
Rosie the Riveter CostumeWhat it requires: Red bandanna, light denim shirt, dark denim jeans, converse or other shoes, red lipstick, and mascara
Audrey Hepburn/ Holly Golightly costumewhat it requires: long black dress, small tiara, strings of pearls, pearl earrings, cigarette stick, black pumps
"A" costumeWhat it requires: red pea coat, black jeans, black heeled boots (or flat), cell phone!!
Mia WallaceWhat it requires: loose fitting white button down, black slack material pant, black flats, bobbed hair-do
Elle Woods costumeWhat it requires: All the pink! Any combination of all pink, collegiate looking accessories and clothing would work! It’s even better if you have pink leather.

What are you going as for Halloween?

Fall Style Inspiration

Hello, World.

Even though it’s mid-September, it’s definitely not feeling like it. There weather is really not feeling like fall, given that it’s 90 degrees almost daily, with a few 75 days thrown in. All I really want is for it to be cold, so I can wear sweaters and boots, and not be way too hot. In light of the warm weather, I wanted to share some of my favorite fall looks to inspire those of you who, like me, are suffering in still too warm weather.
