December Daily Week 2

Hello, World!

Today I am happy to share December Daily, week 2 with you! I seriously love this project, just as much as I love the holiday season. I was also really proud of how my album turned out this year because I was able to dedicate time each day to it. I used the album as a study break, a creative outlet in the midst of finals season! Hope you like my pages.

My Top Holiday Movies

Hello, World.

As the holidays approach, I wanted to take a moment to share my favorite holiday movies. there are so many great holiday movie picks, and this is definitely not a comprehensive list, but I wanted to share the movies I return to year after year. For those of you studying for finals, take a break every now and then and watch one of these films to remind you there is light at the end of the finals tunnel: CHRISTMAS!

Holiday movies.png

The Holiday | starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black, and Jude Law, this pick is a sure win. It’s corny in places, but the overall story is so good, and it’s one I can watch over and over.

Eloise at the Christmastime | If you want to return to your childhood, I recommend this winner. It’s so cute! And it makes you wish you lived in the Plaza Hotel!

The Santa Clause | Tim Allen is too good in this! I love this movie, and I especially love the sequel.

The Family Man | This is a family favorite in my house! It’s one of the few holiday movies my dad will watch. The message of this film is so good, and reminds us to be thankful!

Either of the first two Harry Potter films | Before things get too dark in the Harry Potter world, I think the first two have so much magic, and do have Christmas sequences!

What’s your holiday favorite?

Gift Guide: Christmas 2016

Hello, World.

I know it feels a bit early to be thinking about Christmas, but I don’t think it’s ever too early to start thinking about gifts. For me, I try to get through finals and then worry about it, but then I always feel pressed for time. Thinking about gifts early makes sure you’re giving great gifts, and makes sure you have time for them to ship to you, and that the items aren’t sold out!! So, I put together a gift guide, and wanted to help make your holiday shopping experience as painless as possible.

Stocking stuffers are a fun part of Christmas because you can give your loved ones a little something extra! I also think stocking stuffer ideas can double as small gifts for people in our life that you want to show a little love and appreciation to!

My top picks for stocking stuffers are:EcoTools Lovely Looks: Glamorous Glow Set • EcoTools Kate Spade New York Eat Cake For Breakfast Phone Charger for iPhone®5 and 5s • Kate Spade slip Silk Eye Mask Vivid Leather Earbud Case Library of Flowers Linden Luminary, 5 oz. • Library of Flowers Philosophy Pure Grace Perfumed Body Spritz 8 Oz. • philosophy tarte Amazonian butter lipstick • Tarte Gingham Cosmetics Case Women’s Italian Leather Classic Gloves, Jewel-Toned Ribbed hat with faux-fur pom-pom • J.CrewBaubleBar ‘Flamenco’ Drop Earrings • BaubleBar Leather Zip Wristlet Fossil Rfid Passport Case • Fossil Cable over-the-knee socks (2-pack) • Gap CB Gift That’s All ‘Live Fearlessly’ Ceramic Trinket Tray

Here are some bigger gifts for the people you feel confident spending a little more on. I typically go big for my mom, sister, brother-in-law, and dad.

I like to go especially crazy for my mom. She and I are so close (think Lorelai and Rory without the Season 6 crazy), and so I always want to show her how much I appreciate her during the holidays. I’m so excited to return to California, and a big part of being home for the holidays is how special my mom insists on making them.

For mom: Leather Handle Boat and Tote
Ray-Ban Round Monochromatic Clubmaster® Sunglasses, Black/Green
Tory Burch all around zip wallet
Burberry Check Wool & Cashmere Scarf
Aerie Power Naps Sleep Mask
stila ‘eyes are the window TM – soul’ eyeshadow palette

New Friends can be tricky to buy for, but I think it’s also important to recognize, to some degree, that you’re excited to have the new friendship! Here are some small, or larger, ways to show you care.

Boston, Massachusetts Calligraphy Map Art Print
J.Crew ‘Edie’ Ruffle Top
Argento Vivo Personalized Large 3-Initial Letter Monogram Necklace
Artisan Crafted Majolica Ceramic Bird Mugs (Pair), ‘Owl Hospitality’
Plaid Flannel Fringe Scarf for Men
Kate Spade New York – Ready Set Bow Bangle Bracelet
Cable crewneck sweater with ruffle sleeves

Screen Shot 2016-11-08 at 1.35.22 PM.pngBuying for men can be even trickier. I think men are the hardest to shop for because they, at least the men I know, never want anything! But, there are ways to show you care that are both cute and practical. My worst fear is I’ll buy something, and it’ll sit in the dark corners of their closet.

Waxed Canvas Laptop Sleeve
Leather bottoms-up flask
Wool-blend tech gloves
Classic Gift Set
Bean’s Cuffed Beanie Men’s
Heavyweight flannel shirt
Men’s Tek Gear® Fleece Crew Sweatshirt

What gifts are you giving this season?

Hello, World.
Break is coming to a close, and tomorrow I will get in my car and begin the drive back to school. I love Christmas, but I always end up going back to school with way more than I came with (the downside to gifts if there is one). Packing is always a bit challenging, as I attempt to figure out the best way to pack everything so I don’t have way too many bags in my car. Anyway, I thought I would share what I’ve been up to lately.
Drinking: As part of my new year routine, I’ve tried to drink more water every day. I’m usually really terrible at staying hydrated, preferring lattes or tea to water, but the longer I go without drinking a lot of water each day, the more I feel dehydrated and tired. So, from now on, it’s more water bottles than coffee cups for me.
Weather: It is currently way too warm to be January. I’m not a fan of hot weather, and I certainly despise warmth when it’s supposed to be cold. I’m hoping that there will be some colder weather in the coming weeks. Janterm just wouldn’t feel right if it was warm.
Reading: I’m currently reading Brooklyn Girls by Gemma Burgess. I went to Barnes and Noble after receiving a gift card with the intention of buying a “light read.” I love being an English major, I do, but sometimes I need a break from Hemingway and Faulkner. Some people act like if you buy a book that isn’t a classic, you’re not reading anything good, but I disagree. As someone who wanted to write young adult fiction, I think relatable books are important. So, while Hemingway can teach me all about tortured love, I thought a book that had a review that went something like, “any girl who has no idea what she wants to do or how she’s going to get what she wants should read this,” sounded perfect. It’s funny how sometimes you find a book that is exactly what you need.
Thinking About: I should be packing. I have so much left to do, but I’m procrastinating because I can. I also get bored, and am more likely to forget things if I try to pack in a hurry or all at once without any breaks. I can power through some things, but not packing. Packing is it’s own monster I tackle in it’s own way. I’m also thinking a bit about JanTerm, and what this JanTerm will be like compared to last year. Last year’s class was amazing, and I had a wonderful professor, and I got to write a play, and spend time with some of my close friends every day. That’ll be hard to beat.
Excited About: I’m so glad it’s a new year, and I’m excited to started living a healthier life, and I’m excited to be rid of things that hurt. I’m excited for new beginnings, and seeing my friends. I’m also excited to get back to school because even when I’m miserable there, I’m still my happiest.
Addicted to: I have an obsession with Scandal, but you probably already knew that because of this post.

I guess I better get back to packing because I have to go to my neighbor’s tonight for a bit, then my mom and I are going to watch Season 3 Episode 1 of Scandal (I warned you the addiction was real). I always miss home when I’m gone, but I’m always excited to go when it’s time. Coming and going is a funny thing. I’ll miss my parents, my sister, my dog, and my full-sized bed, but I do love my residence hall, my friends, and even sleeping on a bed where my feet dangle if I sleep a certain way. Enjoy today!

December Recap

Hello, World.

Happy New Year! We are now officially in 2014, but before I dive head first into a brand new year, I wanted to recap the final month of 2013. December was a rather mediocre month, but Christmas happened, and I love Christmas. I love coming home so I can spend time with my family, but I miss school after a week or so. I head back on Sunday, and I’m so excited. Last year JanTerm was my favorite part of the year, and I hope this year will be the same.
1) Finals happened, and they went well, despite the normal lack of sleep, unhealthy intake of coffee, and unbearable stress that usually comes with them. I only had one “final exam,” but I had three huge papers in my other classes. I survived, and my grades came out strong, but I really do despise finals.
2) I visited my roommate and best friend’s family to help decorate their Christmas tree. That was a great day, even though I just about had a mental breakdown in the evening when I realized I hadn’t gotten any studying done, and I had my big exam in one days.
3) My amazing friends bought me coffee because I survived my Biblical Literature final. Gosh I love them. They know the way to my heart.
4) I came home for the holidays. My mom has the best tree around. I love being home during Christmas, and I just love Christmas in general. I feel like everyone is happier during the holidays, and I feel like everyone is gearing up for a new year.
5) My sister got a puppy! A little cocker spaniel named Molly Mae. She is the sweetest thing, and I had a blast babysitting her for a few days of break.
6) While home, I got to hangout with three of my friends from high school, Lindy, Nick, and Rossy. This picture is of Lindy and I when we had our Christmas movie night, and caught up. Not pictured is when Nick and I baked cookies, watched movies, and hung out. Rossy and I had coffee, gluten free coffee cake, talked for hours, and watched Gossip Girl, the show we loved all through high school, and would talk about in class!
7) My sister and I got our nails done together! I got pretty traditional Christmas-inspired nails, and my sister did the Stiletto Nail look in a pretty purple with glitter and black! I like having my nails done. Chipped nails are kind of a pet-peeve.
8) My mom’s best friend, and my long-time mentor and inspiration visited! She’s always encouraged me, and always assured me I wasn’t some terrible writer that would end up in a cubicle writing the business letters for a company I hated. That may be a reality someday, but she convinced me every time I see her that it probably won’t happen.
9) Christmas! This Christmas was mellow, and filled with family and cute holiday jammies. It passed too quickly, but I had a great day with my family and the new puppy.

This month was good, but I am so excited to say goodbye to 2013, welcome 2014 with open arms, and move into JanTerm. Hope you’re having a great day, and the New Year’s hangover isn’t too terrible.

Christmas Recap

Hello, World.
Today is December 26, which means that Christmas has come and gone much faster than you can say, “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays.” It always amazes me how there is so much build-up to Christmas, and how much excitement surrounds it, and yet the day of Christmas always seems to pass so quickly. When my sister arrived at my parent’s house for Christmas morning, she made a joke that Christmas is the one day of the year that I am a morning person. She definitely had a point. Every Christmas Eve, my mom and I still put out milk and cookies for Santa, and read The Night Before Christmas, and cuddle on the couch next to the tree and fire before going to sleep. We’re also allowed to open one gift, and my mom always acts like it’s some huge, unknown gift, but we all know it’s our special jammies to wear on Christmas Eve, and while we open gifts in the morning. On Christmas morning, my sister jumps on me to wake me up, and we each make hot coco or coffee, and then distribute our gifts and stockings. Our method of opening gifts is rather unorganized, but yet still works. We open “all at once,” but it usually works out so that we each watch on person open, then just go around the room. I love watching people open gifts. Their reactions are always priceless, especially my mom, who is always convinced she didn’t get anything, and then LOVES whatever we got her. This year my sister gave her homemade Angel Pagan wings because my mom is a huge Pagan fan, and we have tickets to the Giants games. So, here are some snapshots of my Christmas Eve, and Christmas:
Anyway, this Christmas was pretty low-key, but overall it was relaxing, and everyone got wonderful gifts. Also, there was lots of good food, which always makes for a happy household. How was you Christmas? Enjoy today!

Last Minute Stocking Stuffers

Hello, World.

With Christmas on Wednesday, I thought I would do my final installment in the holiday gift buying post sequence. For those of you who need a few more stocking stuffers for your family and friends, I’ve composed a little list of easy-to-get items!

Hand Lotion to keep their hands soft, despite the cold // Slippers to keep their feet warm on Christmas morning // “Love” Bracelet to show you care // Socks to wear with slippers // A journal so they can remember everything // A cute phone case because why not? // Sharpie mugs to send a personal message // a portable iPhone charger // A 2014 Planner to help them keep organized in the new year

Enjoy your day! I know I will be spending today and tomorrow finalizing my gifts, and wrapping final little items for those I love.

The Best Way To Spread Christmas Cheer

Hello, World.

I thought I would share how we decorate for Christmas at my house. Similar to Halloween, we do it big, and we go all out with our decorations. Each year, my mom picks a new “theme” that she wants to follow with her decorations. Most of her decorations are her creation, as in various pieces she buys and then puts together to make all of it come together. She likes the house to be decorated when I get home from school so that I start feeling the Christmas cheer as soon as finals are finished. And the Christmas carols, those play until the New Year. So, here’s how we do it:

So, there you have Christmas at my house. It’s quite the ordeal, but I love it! How do you decorate? DIY, store bought, or family pieces that have passed through generations?

Mini Final Hiatus to Spread Christmas Cheer

Hello, World.

Over the weekend, in the midst of the finals chaos, my friends and I took a small hiatus, and went to my roommate’s house to help her family get and decorate their Christmas tree! It was so much fun, and it was a nice little stress reliever right before my stress level shot up. I had my Biblical Literature final today, and it was hard, but overall I actually really enjoyed the class, which was interesting because I really was not excited about taking it by any stretch of the imagination. It’s not that I’m not spiritual; I’m just not the most religious person (but that’s just me, religion is awesome for a lot of people). So, I finished the test, and I felt like the test went really well, but if it didn’t, then I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. I did my best, and that’s really all I can do.
So, anyway, school rant over. On to my day eating cheap Chinese food, decorating a Christmas tree, getting a Christmas tree, and hanging out with my friends. It was so much fun! I love decorating Christmas trees. My mom is kind of crazy about the whole process; it’s usually multiple days, with Christmas music, and hot coco. I’m a little sad I’m not home to help her decorate anymore, but at the same time I love going home to a really holiday-themed home. Finals are here, and there is a wee bit of tension on campus, but I’m excited for the holidays. I just have to scrape together some motivation to finish my last few assignments.
I had a really great day! To those who still have a ton of final tests, you can do! I hope the curve is ever in your favor, and I hope you punch them in the face. Enjoy today!
