Easy Halloween Outfits

4 Easy Halloween Costume Ideas.png

Hello, World.

Halloween is just around the corner, though how it’s already that time of the year is unclear. In light of the approaching holiday, I wanted to share some quick, easy costumes ideal for those of us who don’t have time to put together an elaborate costume and don’t want to spend $70 on an outfit we will wear once [Halloween costumes have seriously gone up and it’s a little ridiculous]. So, I’ve put together four outfits you can likely find at your local thrift store, any Forever 21 Store for a bargain,  or your own closet.

First up: The Pink Lady. This iconic costume came into being after Grease and has stayed popular ever since. Grab yourself a pink jacket, some leather pants, pumps, and a silk scarf and you’re good to go!

Screen Shot 2017-10-11 at 5.58.59 PM

Second, Cher from Clueless… As if! The key to a great Cher costume is mixing extremely feminine touches with classic 90s pieces. I guess its a good thing 90s trends are making a comeback (hello, velvet and chokers!). The look below is a more subdued look than the signature yellow plaid outfit. This look is complete with a furry pen, cross necklace, knee highs, and Mary Jane shoes. Screen Shot 2017-10-11 at 6.16.37 PM

I recently watched the new Gal Gadot Wonder Woman movie… I know, I’m late to the party. Still, I loved it! I was inspired to create a fun Wonder Woman look. Carry a fake sword so you can take on Ares, over-the-knee boots in red (or black or pewter). Find a red corset or red bodysuit, and match with the signature blue and white star skirt for a 20 minute look. Screen Shot 2017-10-11 at 6.41.48 PM

Inspired by one of my close friends, Rossy, I’ve put together a DJ look! I imagine this is what an aspiring, kick ass DJ would wear (mainly because I could see Rossy wearing this look and she fits the bill). Screen Shot 2017-10-11 at 7.45.41 PM

What are you going as for Halloween? Do you prefer store-bought or homemade costumes?

Intoducing the Warby Parker Archive Collection

ARCHIVE_Carraway_Webster_OPT_Colby_Shelby_021_FINAL.png

Hello, World.

While some people may say that a new hair color, colored contacts, or a great new outfit can make someone feel like a new person, I’m of the opinion that a great pair of eyeglasses or sunglasses can add just the right touch to your look. Although I don’t wear my glasses every day, I always enjoy picking out new frames. One of my favorite places to get new frames? Warby Parker. Warby Parker is a great company that designs chic, affordable frames if you’re in need of a new pair of eyeglass. Many eyeglass frames offered at your optometrist or other sellers are so expensive, and often the design selection is limited. Warby Parker, however, produces young, unique designs for under $100 (!!!). Warby Parker not only has a great selection of eyeglasses but also carries various sunglasses styles as well.

A few weeks ago in my business associations class, we were talking about social responsibility for companies, and Warby Parker immediately popped into my head. Not only do they offer amazing prices for designer eyewear, they also give a pair of glasses every time you buy a pair. The mission of Warby Parker is one I stand behind 100%, which is why I’m so thrilled to share the new Archive Collection with you today!

ARCHIVE_Webster-Lg_Jet-Black_Sun_Muriel_LOC_094_FINAL.png

The Archive Collection is a group of mixed-material frames that are hand-assembled and hand-finished by a master craftsman in Japan. The Collection includes five new styles in seven color combinations that are so distinctive you’re unlikely to find such unique frames elsewhere. Just in time for fall, the collection features Rosewood Tortoise and Burnt Amber Tortoise with Navy, Auburn, and Merlot hues. One thing that always irritates me about my glasses is when they start to slip over time, but the new Collection from Warby Parker has adjustable silicone nose pads for an easy, anti-slip fit. To celebrate the launch of the new Collection, I put together some outfits that I would wear with the various frames! I think the subtle, but distinct details of the styles allow them to pair nicely with casual outfits or more polished outfits.

First up in my outfit pairings is the Webster frame that features chic tortoise and a navy rim. I adore this frame because I think it has a vintage look with a modern twist. Wireframes seem to be a thing of the past, but they’re definitely making a come back, and I’m loving the trend. I think tortoise makes any frame more versatile, and I adore pairing tortoise with navy, along with the clear bridge! Fun fact? I don’t always wear my glasses because I think they make my nose look bigger. If you suffer from the same issue, a clear bridge will likely alleviate that problem! I would wear this frame with the outfit below, which features rich textures, such as suede, leather, and chunky knits. I think this outfit would be great for studying all day and heading to a cozy dinner in the evening!

WP-Webster-4225-Eyeglasses-Front-A2-sRGB.png

Screen Shot 2017-10-07 at 11.12.01 AM.png

Next up is the Dewey frame, which honestly… what’s not to love? I have a wider face, and this frame’s arched corners would likely compliment my face shape! I love the merlot hues paired with gold finishes and a darker tortoise. I think this frame would be perfect for fall days studying or working followed by pumpkin patch visits and cozying up with apple cider donuts! My outfit inspiration for this frame comes from spending an afternoon wandering the cobblestone streets of a European inspired town. Burgundy over-the-knee boots compliment the merlot rim, gold details in the bag and watch bring out the golden tones in the frame. I also love pairing tailored pieces with chunky knits! The two textures can be unconventional and distinctive, which I think is the perfect outfit to pair with the new Dewey frame.

WP-Dewey-4237-Eyeglasse-Front-A2-sRGB.pngScreen Shot 2017-10-07 at 11.26.06 AM.png

The Carraway sunglasses are so classic, especially in black with a small golden detail on the bridge. The sunglasses are a pair I could see being a staple for years to come that never fade from style. I paired them with a casual look to show they can be dressed down or worn with a classic black dress and pearls. Either look would compliment the frame. However, I like them with a lightweight sweatshirt, boyfriend jeans, two-tone tote, and leopard slide loafers. Mixing patterns and textures in the outfit makes classic sunglasses a must!

Screen Shot 2017-10-07 at 11.29.41 AM.png

The thing I like most about the Archive Collection is the how versatile each frame is. I think regardless of which frame your purchase, it can be worn daily with anything in your closet. Glasses are an accessory many people forget about. If you’re a young professional like me, wearing outfits that are “business casual” or slightly more formal than your typical everyday look, I think the Archive Collection offers amazing options for frames. I love the Webster frame with a tortoise rim and black on top. Sleek but bold, the frame can easily be paired with a funky blazer, crisp blouse, jeans, loafers, and your briefcase. I describe this look as the “What she tackles, she conquers” look, which would be worn while prepping for a job interview, while getting coffee with a networking contact, or meeting with other young professionals!

I would highly recommend checking out the new Archive Collection because Warby Parker offers great eyeglasses and sunglasses for the new season. The mission behind the company is what initially attracted me to their glasses, but the beautiful designs and unique color combinations are what keep me coming back.

What do you think of the new collection?

My Fall Wishlist

Hello, World.

As I write this, I’m sipping a venti chai latte (hot, of course, as we’re well into September) and wearing a cardigan, despite the fact it’s still 80 degrees outside. I keep seeing northeastern bloggers going apple picking, snapping fall foliage, and wearing chunky sweaters. I almost burn up wearing a cardigan and it’s nearly October! Anyway, I’m trying to get into the fall spirit and would like to share a little fall wishlist with some pieces I’d love to add to my closet this year. I love the cozy, brisk mornings of fall, but I have yet to experience one… here are pieces that are getting me excited for the day it feels like fall.

Screen Shot 2017-10-04 at 12.19.16 PM.png

Baseball Cap | Leopard Flats | Green Belt | Patagonia Fleece Hoodie | Patagonia Popover | Burnt Orange Sweater | J. Crew Bell Sleeve Top| Monogram Leather Gloves | Cashmere Beanie | Over the Knee Boots | Barbour Plaid Scarf

I love over the knee boots… ever since Serena van der Woodsen wore a gray, suede pair with her Constance uniform. I have only owned one pair, but I’m tempted to invest in another pair this season. They look so good with skirts, bare-legged on not-quite-cold- days! I also love the fuzzy Patagonia fleeces, but I have yet to invest in one. Speaking of which, I also love burnt orange! I think it’s the quintessential fall color.

What styles are you loving this season?

Fourth of July Festivities

Hello, World.

Happy belated Fourth of July! I hope you had a relaxing holiday. Fourth of July is one of my favorite summer days/holidays. I grew up going to a family cabin on a tiny lake, and the people there go very very America during the Fourth. The holiday isn’t a single day. It’s a whole weekend. One nice thing about this is everyone, even those who have to work the holiday, get to celebrate. There is pancake breakfast, a dance, sand castle contests, a bonfire, etc. It’s an event. Typically, we go to our cabin at a new lake, and we spend the day relaxing on the beach while family friends make hot dogs. Then we go watch fireworks after dinner. This year, however, we didn’t make it to the cabin. My dad was worried about working and we don’t have air conditioning in our cabin, which worried my sister because Piper (my niece) can’t get too hot!

So, this year we stayed home. While this may seem like a downer, it was actually super relaxing! We all dressed in our red, white, and blue and hung out by the pool. We swam and my dad smoked a few racks of ribs. My sister and I each made a dessert [she made berry crumble and I made a s’mores bake].

IMG_3006.JPGIMG_3084.JPGIMG_3070.JPGIMG_3032.JPGIMG_3003.JPG
All in all, it was a great holiday. I’m absolutely loving being home this summer, and I feel so blessed to be near my amazing family!

How’d you spend your holiday?

Truly,

Fourth of July Outfits

Hello, World.

Fourth of July is coming soon! I feel like this holiday always sneaks up on me. I totally forget about it, and I in March I’ll think “this fourth of July I’ll remember to get an outfit for our celebration.” Then we’re at the end of June, and I have once again forgotten to get something. So, I’m here to share some easy Fourth of July outfits that could be replicated with things already in your closet! To get you in the spirit, here is a gif from Legally Blonde: Red, White and Blonde:
12.19.7

First up we have an off the shoulder red dress, which I think is perfect for the Fourth, but would also be perfect for any other summer day, so you’d be able to re-wear it to dinner or to the park! The pale blue sunglasses are a festive touch, which can also be re-worn. A navy cross-body and white converse are ideal for running around a parade or other local festivities.
d5e5a81b9fc6144fad3dc71cbd6a4fc7For most people, the Fourth is spent on or very near a beach! So, I wanted to share three of my favorite swimsuits for this year. I love the old fashioned blue two piece, I think you really cant go wrong with it. I also think the old fashioned suits are so flattering (I mean, Marilyn Monroe wore this style, so obviously it works). I think swimsuits are great on their own, but sunglasses can add a little extra to an otherwise simple look.

swim 1, sunglass 1 | swim 2, sunglass 2 | top, bottoms, sunglass 3Screen Shot 2017-06-19 at 9.55.48 PMI love the off-the-should look, as you probably guessed by now. This cute gingham top with the bow detailing is perfect for backyard BBQs are dinner before fireworks, especially if you’re experiencing the heat wave on the west coast! I love the look of white ripped shorts, and I think they balance the preppy feel of the top! I am obsessed with slide sandals… It’s a little embarrassing, but I think they are just so chic, and I definitely love the red. I could also see the shoes worn with black skinny jeans and  black for dinner out in the fall. Screen Shot 2017-06-20 at 7.50.38 PM

What are you wearing this Fourth of July and how are you celebrating?

A Father’s Day Style Upgrade with Bonobos

IMG_4309.JPG

Hello, World.

Happy Father’s Day! I don’t know about you, but my dad is one of the hardest people to shop for, so finding the perfect Father’s Day gift is getting more difficult with every passing year. This year, my dad mentioned wanting some new clothes (finally) because he’s worn the same pieces for years. One of his favorite tees looks like a dog chewed the neckline because its so worn! My dad used to live in the Bay Area of California, and he always talks about how he took his style much more seriously when he lived there. A common line when reminiscing about those years is “I dressed much better then.” A common outfit? A polo, 501 jeans, or Sperry topsiders. Then he switched over to khakis, an oxford, and those ever faithful Sperry topsiders.

His style over the years really hasn’t changed much! He still wears the same basics, but he jokes that he has multiple wardrobes for various needs. He farms rice, so he has his more farm-appropriate outfits. However, my dad is also a CPA (certified public accountant), so he also wears more sophisticated outfits during certain times of the year. So, in light of my dad wanting some new clothes, I thought it would be fun to put together some outfits for any time of the year. All the pieces shown here (with the exception of the Sperry topsiders are from Bonobos.com, an awesome menswear site that offers clothing for every man that actually fits correctly. The secret to their fit is the curved waistband that conforms to a man’s natural waistline. So, you can easily say goodbye to poor fitting clothing that is either too tight or too boxy! They also offer free shipping both ways so shopping for the men in your life has never been easier. You can get the experience of shopping in a store from the comfort of your home (or college housing or office is your a busy student or working gal)!

Screen Shot 2017-06-17 at 10.18.43 AM

Above are my two “summer” or warm weather looks for my dad. I personally think he has a strong sense of style, even if he is a bit picky about what he’ll wear. The outfit on the left is a slightly upgraded version of what he wears now to slightly nicer functions in the summertime. However, I would add a bit more color to his wardrobe. My dad tends to wear a LOT of blues, but I am a fan of green, so I think this green button down is subtle but would add dimension to his wardrobe. I also wanted to honor the clothes of his favorite person fashion period, so I added khakis shorts that have a younger fit. I finished this look with two-tone leather and suede Sperrys, which add a nice touch to this otherwise basic outfit.

The second outfit is what I would call my dad’s “uniform,” but it’s upgraded because the the fit of the shorts is fresh and a bit shorter than his normal short, but not too short. I also think the grey polo is such a classic polo it can be dressed up or down. My dad wears the same belt today that he wore 20 years ago. I think the dark Bonobos belt has a subtle detailing that gives it a little something extra. So, even when my dad is at his most casual, there’s still a pop of style. I also finished this outfit with traditional brown leather Sperrys, which is true to my dad. Screen Shot 2017-06-17 at 10.35.10 AM

As I mentioned, the thing I would do to tweak my dad’s style is add more color. So, knowing he may give me an “are you crazy?” look when I recommend the above button downs, I still think they would look good on him. To the left is a dressed up casual look. A darker wash jean, cuffed with a pink checked button down is something I could see my dad wearing around our town to dinner or happy hour. I would also use the same belt from his uniform look.

To the right is the outfit my dad would wear to slightly more formal events. Nothing we do is ever really formal, and if it is he’d wear a suit. I think this look, however, is perfect for the events he attends regularly. The orange gingham shirt is a pattern he’d wear, but the color adds a pop that is currently missing from his wardrobe. I think a lighter belt would compliment this outfit and add a nice detail. I also wanted to honor my dad’s love of khaki once again, and think he can pull off khaki well, so went with the Jetsetter pant.

I really like the mission of Bonobos, and would love to add a few of their pieces to my dad’s wardrobe! Beside their online store, they also have 30 locations in the US, and they offer personalized shopping experiences where you can enjoy a cold one while trying on their styles! I would recommend you checking them out, and keep them in mind for next Father’s Day or Christmas!

What’s your dad’s style like?

Summer Beauty Favorites

Hello, World.

When summer comes, I prefer to go lighter on my makeup, but I still like full coverage. I think a big part of summer is taking care of your skin, and making sure you’re protected while still being able to enjoy the warmer weather!

My mom bought this Korres Body Wash in the White Grape [grown in Santorini, Greece] scent, and it. is. delicious. Honestly, it smells SO fresh and clean. As soon as I smelled it, I ordered a bottle for myself. The Korres brand of shower gel is so hydrating. I’ve also never had any problems with the product irritating my skin!

IMG_2629.JPG

I don’t change my makeup very frequently. Usually, once I find a product I like, I stick with it until I don’t like it anymore or want a change. Recently, I felt like I needed a new moisturizer. I like my skin to feel hydrated, but NOT greasy. I really dislike moisturizers that leave a filmy feel to your skin. So, I recently switched to Clinique moisture surge. It’s AMAZING. I also went through a bit of a “I don’t like any of the mascaras I’m trying. What is wrong?” phase recently. Then I was watching Carly of the College Prepster go through her summer make up routine, and she mentioned Too Faced’s Better Than Sex mascara. My mom had recently ordered it, and didn’t like it, so offered me the tube to try. I love it! My eyelashes look fuller and more prominent, which I like. IMG_2625.JPG

Urban Decay’s Naked concealer is probably my favorite. I used it a while ago, then decided to change. But I went back to it because it’s so weightless and easy. It also covers my dark circles really well, but I don’t [think] it makes me look cake-y.

In terms of concealer, I am obsessed with IT Cosmetics CC cream with SPF 50. It’s light, provides full coverage, but isn’t too much! I highly recommend this product if you’re in search of a great foundation.

I also love Urban Decay’s sin eye primer. It’s provides a bit of shimmer, so sometimes it’s all I wear on my eyes. Other times I just put a little color in my crease. Too Faced’s chocolate sample from Sephora is a great palette. I use it sometimes for my eyes if I want to wear a bit more color. I also love the bronzer. I usually don’t wear much bronzer, but I like this one because it’s not too dark on my skin, but will add dimension.

Finally, I love the smell of Lavender. I have some spray I put on my pillows, and I usually buy candles that have lavender in them. It’s one of my favorite smells. So, this Bath & Body lotion that is Lavender and Sandalwood is perfect for summer. It smells fresh, but has woody, more earthy undertones that are perfect for summer!

What beauty products are you loving?

Getting Formal

Hello, World!

With prom and formal season approaching quickly, I thought it would be helpful to share my hints for making the most of your night! I believe that the key to a successful formal or prom night is feeling amazing in what you’re wearing. When I was in high school, prom season was always a bit scary. I wanted the perfect dress, complimented by the best jewelry, a pretty hair style, and effortless, red carpet ready makeup.

After high school, formal events weren’t really on my radar. My college didn’t have greek life, so we didn’t have sorority formal, and we also didn’t have “formal” dances. Interestingly enough, law school has a prom type event. Last weekend was Barrister’s Ball, an annual event held at law schools in common law countries. It was a blast, and it was the first time I really dressed up since my sister’s wedding!

It was so fun to get all glam. My normal glam squad (aka my sister and mom) are all the way in CA. Luckily, my roommate helped me apply some fake tan (I use Josie Maran; I was wearing black and my skin hasn’t seen the sun since September). We went and got mani-pedis, and I got my makeup done at Ulta (more on that to come in a future post). Getting super fancy is so much fun, but sometimes its hard to know the right thing to wear for different functions. For example, there were a lot of mixed messages about how formal the Ball was supposed to be. Here are some examples of what my friends and I wore:

Processed with VSCO with a6 presetProcessed with VSCO with a6 presetProcessed with VSCO with a6 presetProcessed with VSCO with a6 presetProcessed with VSCO with a6 preset

I have four commandments for formal wear that I want to share!

  1. Get a dress that you feel incredible in. Try on as many dresses as you need to until you find the one that makes you feel like Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn or your personal style icon. Loving the dress will mean you wear it more confidently.
  2. Treat yourself to the royal treatment. In preparation for a super formal event, I usually light candles, put on a great playlist, and wear my favorite robe around. I feel a little more glamorous, which makes the getting ready process more fun.
  3. Wear the makeup you want to wear. I think with formal wear there is pressure to really amp up your glam. If this is what you like, you should totally go for it! However, if you love subtle makeup, don’t be afraid to wear less. Or pull an Alicia Keys, and don’t wear any!
  4. Jewelry is like icing on a cake – too much can make you unhappy and too little can leave you wanting. I usually go less heavy on jewelry, especially as I get older. In high school, I wore bracelets, earrings, a necklace, etc. Now, I figure out what I think will most compliment the dress and myself in the dress. With the above look, I only wore large, fun earrings!

I think girls sometimes have it easier – I know, I know, don’t object yet – because there is such a plethora of input (go read Seventeen or Cosmo or any website), and you can easily figure out what is appropriate. However, menswear is a bit trickier. There isn’t the same amount of access to information for menswear that there is for women. Additionally, to be completely transparent, most men just ask their date what to wear. I don’t know about you, but when my dates would ask me, I would just give them a color (to match my dress), but leave out any real detail, or any real answer for that matter. Luckily, The Black Tux put together a detailed but quick cheat sheet for proper menswear for various events.

How To Style Your Man.jpg

Next time your date for prom or formal asks what to wear, you can be more specific. Or, if you’re having a formal date night with your boyfriend, you can help him dress accordingly. For those of you with brothers, you can help him be fashionable and make the right choice for his next date/formal event. When I’m home, my dad usually asks my opinion on fashion related things. I do my best, but menswear isn’t my specialty. If you’re in a similar boat, this cheat sheet helps! Dressing well can be expensive, but an option I recommend (especially for prom or formal), is renting! Men can choose from a great selection of menswear to make them look their best.

Most guys and girls get into a bit of a rut in their everyday dress. However, with formal events girls at least have an opportunity to really mix it up. Guys, on the other hand, tend to stick to roughly two options (tux or tux). This guide from The Black Tux encourages a little more creativity, and gives specifics about what exactly should be worn according to what the dress code is. When you’re sure of the pieces you need, it’s easier to have the confidence to get more creative with what version of those pieces you select! For example, if you know you need a sport coat, trousers, and a button down, you may be more willing to pick a patterned button down because you’re no longer worrying about what kind of shirt to wear.

I hope you enjoyed this post!

Heels for Spring

Hello, World.

I recognize the title of this post probably seems like an oxymoron, but I wanted to share boots I think are perfect for transitioning from cold climates to warmer climates (or warm to cold when summer turns to fall). I love boots, and I wear them almost daily in the fall and winter seasons. Lately I can’t get enough of the heeled bootie look. I think heeled booties would be perfect with skinny jeans and a cute blouse/top, or a dress and jean jacket. I’m also obsessed with the Sam Edelman over the knee grey boots (let’s be real, this look became cool when Serena Van Der Woodsen wore a similar pair with her school uniform).  Over the knee boots are perfect to pair with a skirt, and lightweight sweater.

Screen Shot 2017-02-23 at 9.11.18 AM.png

I wanted to share my top picks right now! I think my next boot purchase will hopefully be an over the knee pair! I usually try to dig through end-of-season sales, which I find is the best time to buy boots!
