As I enter my last semester of school, I can feel that the new year is already in full swing. Something I’m working on this year is cultivating healthy habits. I want to allow more space for self-care, whether that’s a face mask, wine and movie to end the day or reading good books or working out (or not working out). I’m trying to be more intentional about self-care early in the year so I can develop stronger habits. 2019 is a big year. In some ways, it feels like 2016 but even bigger. I will graduate law school. I will take the bar. I will begin working. I will no longer be a student. It’s a time of transition. One of my favorite ways to practice self-care is to read novels. I’ve always been a reader, but lately, I just have this feeling of calm and happiness when I have a book in my hands. So, I wanted to share my “bookish” goals for 2019.
Read at least 15 books.
Last year I set the goal of 12 books on my Goodreads account. I surpassed it and read 19 books. This year, I’m upping my goal but with finishing law school and studying for the bar, I’m not sure how much time I’ll have for reading. I want to make time, but depending on various factors, I may only get in a few chapters at a time!
Read more diverse voices.
Last year I went outside my comfort zone a few times, and the reads where I did ended up being my favorites of the year. Reading diverse voices and genres is something I want to continue in 2019.
Read books I own but haven’t read.
Sometimes I buy books thinking I’ll get to them soon, but then my TBR grows and I forget to circle back. This year I want to read books I have on my shelves that I haven’t read yet. My goal is to do this with one book a month. We’ll see how it goes!
Post Reviews of all of the books I read.
I had a friend ask if I post negative reviews. I will say, I had a very good reading year for 2018. The books I didn’t love, I posted in an Instagram story with quick thoughts. The books I loved I posted an Instagram and review. It’s easier to write about books you love. However, this year I want to write reviews of everything I read. I also plan to begin a book journal, where I can jot down my thoughts as I’m reading. I often find that I may not really enjoy a book but by the end, I think, “oh that was good.” I want a better record of how I feel while reading.
Four goals seem manageable! Cheers to 2019 reading. Let me know by leaving a comment what you plan to read this year.
